François Raquillet has excelled at Mercurey since 1990, giving wines of exemplary quality and unfailing consistency, which age very well. The handover is under way: his daughter Jeanne is on the estate, and converting to organic is among their next challenges. One or two of the more insistent barrel regimes could be dialled back, particularly on the whites. The wines: the whites are over-oaked, with showy wood. La Brigadière stays bracing and lemony, and Les Veleys offers broader, more buttery substance. The reds are far more accomplished: a gliding, supple, spirited profile in Chamirey, a crunchy, tangy wine to drink young. Firmer substance in Vieilles Vignes, a fairly dense red, finely extracted, its mellow tannins well integrated. The juicy Les Vignes des Chazeaux delivers intense, pure raspberry fruit: it shines by its vigour, its softness of texture and the accuracy of its ageing. Among the Premiers Crus, Les Naugues is robust and sun-filled, Les Vasées excellent with small black-fruit notes and velvety flavours. Worked breadth in Les Veleys, built on a solid tannic base, a little compressed by its ageing but not lacking potential. From a century-old Veleys vine, Révélation shows a pulpy juice run through with a nervy sap: its tannic grip on the finish points to its keeping ability.

A nose scented with peach and toast. The palate is generous and balanced, ripe fruit wrapped in nicely melded oak.

Emmanuelle and François (10th generation), together with Jeanne (11th), continue to fly the flag for their appellation. First-rate plant material and controlled yields allow this emblematic Mercurey family to offer wines as complex as they are structured, known for their ageing potential. That reputation in no way prevents the craft from moving on. “For a few years now our extractions have been gentler, punching down giving way to pump-overs,” says Jeanne. On vintages: “2022 gave perfect ripeness and perfect health, which let us try whole-bunch fermentation, at 20% on the Premier Cru Les Vasées,” reveals François. In 2023, “we had to sort, but the result is stunning.” Special mention for the Cuvée Suzanne, the name of Jeanne’s daughter, seen in the photograph, a village Mercurey with nothing to envy of a Premier Cru. The estate has also just acquired a new red Premier Cru, Les Combins, vinified for the first time in 2024.

    A rich nose of black fruit, spice and a liquorice touch. The palate is concentrated and generous, the juicy fruit harmonising with salinity. A long finish with welcome rigour.

    An elegant, rich nose. The palate is concentrated, full of energy, all length. The mid-palate brings density, intense black fruit, the power that makes this wine the divine companion to a rib of beef.

    A discreet, liquorice nose opening slowly onto black cherry and “sweet” oak. The dense, fleshy palate hints at black cherry. The tannins are fine. One to forget in the cellar.

    An intense colour. A nose concentrated on black fruit, fine oak drawing out floral notes. The palate is pulpy, generous in fruit. The tannins are ripe and silky, underlining the wine and its fruit.

    This is a punchy, big wine with lots of personality. Red berries, wildflowers, sweet spice and soy work into the mix. The tannins have some brutish rusticity, but there is so much supple fruit, that they should be easily sopped up soon. Bright, focusing acidity guides the earthy, spicy finish.

François Raquillet has excelled on the terroirs of Mercurey since 1990, giving us wines of exemplary quality and unfailing consistency, which age very well.

The handover is under way: his daughter Jeanne is on the estate, and converting to organic is among their next challenges. 2018, 2019 and now 2020 stand out, as one would expect.

One or two of the more insistent barrel regimes could be dialled back.

The whites need to refine their oak. Precision and freshness characterise Vieilles Vignes, made a little pastry-like by its ageing and warm on the finish. Les Veleys leans on demonstrative, buttery oak, a touch tiring. La Brigadière offers more tension and clarity, nervy and slender, with fine depth and persistence of flavour.

The reds: wild berries and spice in the red Vieilles Vignes, ample and supple in flesh. Clos de Paradis is velvety and spherical in its liquorice fruit; Les Naugues is more vigorous, with firm tannins. A tenderer, fleshier profile in Les Vasées, whose easy substance will relax quickly. Further ripeness and solid build in Les Veleys, the most complete of the Premiers Crus, where the worked tannic base carries into a finish with a note of bark. The Pommard is a fine surprise: full, sapid and structured, with a firm but nuanced limestone frame.

WORKING AS A PAIR

“The whites come through very well; they filled out during ageing. The reds are fruity and generous, but should be drunk within three to six years,” judges the grower. That year marked the estate’s move towards organic certification, expected in 2025.

François Raquillet has added a little Volnay and Pommard at village level. His wines can be tasted at the estate, or at the wine bar he has just opened in Chalon-sur-Saône, facing the cathedral.

François Raquillet no longer farms his 14 hectares alone; he has been joined by his daughter Jeanne, who cut her teeth in 2021, a particularly difficult vintage marked at Mercurey by frost and hail. “It had been a very long time since I last chaptalised the harvest,” he recalls.

The estate’s Premiers Crus, Les Veleys and Clos des Barraults in white, Vasées, Clos Paradis, Veleys and Naugues in red, were decimated by frost, yielding under 20 hectolitres per hectare. “They were dressed in 40% new barrels, with very light toasting, including a toast made specifically for the estate by the Tremeaux cooperage.”

The wines: of the four whites shown, two gems stand out. Begin with Vieilles Vignes, where tension, ageing and minerality fall into line.

A wine praised for its freshness; the use of large oak vessels helps its balance.

The reds will be wines of time.

We admire Vieilles Vignes, which expresses the essence of a fresh Pinot, endlessly ripe.

The palate impresses by its density: extracted, yet fresh and velvety.

Les Veleys is less marked by its ageing, the oak better handled, overtaken by fresh, intense, juicy fruit. Time in the cellar will do it a world of good.
